Dog Tricks Training Tips that Really Work

Dogs are smart animals, though they find learning dog tricks slightly difficult at times. Learning tricks is like learning a new set of skills for the dogs and this makes their learning process slow. Dog training requires the pet owners to be patient, diligent and considerate. Rewarding the dog will boost his confidence and enthusiasm to learn more tricks. Dog training can be an easy affair by following these tips,

Assume the alpha role

You must behave with your dog like a pack leader and command the dog with authority though you love your pet. You should develop a bond with the dog and assure that you are the master whom he should obey.

Keep them interested

Some dogs are very active and attentive while others do not pay any attention to whatever you say or do. Teach your dogs the complicated tricks through play. Include activities like catching or fetching something to increase their participation, in between the breaks. Give them their favourite treats, after they do the tasks so that they remain interested. Switch routines every day to keep them from becoming bored or feeling monotonous.

Introduce new commands gradually

Dogs learn brand new commands slowly so use the commands they are already familiar with, to teach new commands. Be clear with the commands and speak them clearly. Understand the fact that teaching them a fresh set can be a daunting task which is time consuming.

Maintain consistency

Stick to a set of commands always and don’t confuse the dogs by introducing fresh command, frequently. When you spot an instance of misbehaviour, punish him and reward him, when good work is done. Don’t punish misbehaviour on a particular day and reward the same the next day. This can confuse dogs immensely.

Test them periodically

If you are sure that the dogs have mastered your commands, then give a test in a different environment or place using the same command. You might have practiced a ‘sit up’ command in the garden. Test the dog by using the same command in the drawing room and see how it responds, to check its mastery over the trick.

Avoid punishing dogs

Dogs take a lot of time to learn dog tricks and sometimes do it incorrectly. Be patient and don’t punish them for it. Punishing them will discourage them.

Bad mood, cancel training

On a particular day, when you have a bad day at work or home, don’t pursue dog training sessions. You might vent all your anger on your poor dog, when he tests your patience. Cancel the training session on the day and unwind by playing with the dog.

Reward good work

Reward is a motivation for working hard for anybody and dogs are no exception. Praise the animal when he does considerably well. Encourage them by petting them and loving them after the execution of every task, small or big. Motivate the dogs to actively perform the dog tricks by rewarding them their favourite food or treats. Reinforcing their good behaviour and obedience will make them more obedient.
